Global, country and industry rank
Similarweb defines three ranking measures in its Rank help page:
| Field | Comparison group | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Global rank | All other domains | Domain, released month and displayed rank |
| Country rank | Domains in the country that sends the analysed domain the most traffic | The country shown with the rank |
| Industry rank | Domains in the same industry | The industry shown with the rank |
Choose the measure that answers your comparison question. A country position and a global position refer to different groups, so keep their full labels when sharing a result.
Which measures affect rank
The calculation combines Similarweb’s estimates of monthly unique visitors and monthly pageviews across desktop and mobile web. Similarweb ranks websites by that combined traffic estimate within each comparison group.
Visits alone are a different measure. To read the inputs alongside other figures, use the guide to Similarweb traffic metrics and the short definitions of unique visitors and visits.
Similarweb also states that connecting Google Analytics does not affect its rank: rankings use Similarweb estimates. Keep a connected analytics figure labelled by its source when comparing it with the ranking inputs.
Why rank and visits move differently
A rank is a relative position within a group. A visit count describes the analysed website. A change in one site’s visits does not describe the other domains or the full set of ranking inputs.
Illustrative comparison: a website records more visits in a later period, while its rank remains the same. First check whether the rank still belongs to the same monthly release. If it is a new release, compare the audience and pageview estimates and the comparison group before interpreting the result.
Similarweb says rank stays fixed for the month after the monthly release, regardless of the time frame selected in the report. Its methodology FAQ says monthly data is released by the tenth of the following month, sometimes sooner. This is the platform’s schedule.
For unavailable figures, use the explanation of why Similarweb shows “Not enough data”. An unavailable value should remain unavailable in your comparison record.
How to record a rank comparison
Read the Global rank, Country rank and Industry rank fields for the analysed domain. Save a separate row for each field you need:
| Record | First reading | Later reading |
|---|---|---|
| Domain and rank field | Exact domain and full field name | The same domain and field |
| Comparison group | Global, named country or named industry | Confirm the group still matches |
| Release and capture | Released month, capture date and value | Released month, capture date and value |
| Supporting traffic view | Report, metric, period, country and devices | Match the view before comparing |
Keep the ranking release distinct from the traffic period selected on screen. For a comparison with other platforms, use the traffic report hub.
