Traffic Analytics and search estimates
Semrush distinguishes these report families in its comparison of the two methods:
| Report family | Question it addresses | Main basis |
|---|---|---|
| Traffic Analytics | How much traffic a domain receives across sources | Clickstream-based estimates |
| Domain Analytics | How much potential traffic comes from search positions | Keyword positions, search volume and average CTR |
Keep the report name with any number you share. The Traffic Analytics glossary entry provides a short definition; the wider estimated traffic entry helps label an estimate consistently.
Where estimates come from
Traffic Analytics covers direct, referral, search, social and email traffic, as described in Semrush’s traffic-numbers explanation.
Within search reporting, the Organic Rankings Positions guide explains the expected monthly traffic associated with the keywords found in the selected database. Use that label when discussing search visibility.
How to check website traffic in Semrush
For an initial check, open Semrush’s free Website Traffic Checker:
- Enter the domain or webpage URL.
- Choose the analysis scope.
- Select Check Traffic.
Start with Total visits: the checker defines this as estimated visits over the last month. Read the figure together with the domain or URL scope you selected.
This free check is separate from access to the full Traffic Analytics product. Its access guide says the free plan provides sample-domain data; analysing other domains in Traffic Analytics requires the relevant paid access.
How to compare the same report
Choose the report before comparing dates or domains. Semrush identifies device selection, regional database and date range as settings that affect the figures in its method comparison.
Make a short record:
- Tool and report name.
- Domain or URL being analysed.
- Metric, period, regional database and device.
- Any additional filter and the date of capture.
For the next reading, restore those settings and check the same metric. Keep a new tool or a changed filter as a separately labelled observation.
For comparisons with other platforms, use the Similarweb, Semrush and GA4 hub. For a monetary figure, read what Traffic Cost means and check which report it comes from.
Why traffic may be missing or different
For a new or small website, public data may be too limited for a reliable estimate. Semrush explains this coverage limit in the checker FAQ.
Next, check the report and filters. Switching between a channel-wide estimate and a search-position estimate changes what the figure describes.
If the required data is still unavailable, record that status and the settings you checked.
For a campaign inquiry, Extcorp’s Semrush traffic service is the relevant route. Send the report name and the question you want to discuss so the campaign scope can be tied to the chosen measure.
