Access and prerequisites

To connect GA4, prepare the Google account and property for your own website. Similarweb’s official connection guide specifies the stream or property covering the whole website, without subdomains. Check that selection before completing the connection.

The instructions are current as of November 2026, checked on 1 November. The official guide does not specify a minimum GA4 role. Check that your chosen Google account has access to the property you intend to connect.

Record the domain and the property you intend to connect. This gives you a reference when the Google account selection appears.

Connection choices and data visibility

Similarweb documents two connection types:

Public and private GA4 connections described by Similarweb
ConnectionAvailabilityWho can see the connected figures
PublicFree and premium usersAnyone viewing the website on Similarweb
PrivatePremium usersUsers with access to the connected Similarweb account

Choose visibility to match your reporting needs before connecting. The same help page describes changing it later: open Settings > Account, then Profile, select Connected Accounts, choose Private or Public for the site and click Update.

Connection and verification steps

Follow the path documented for your Similarweb access.

From the Similarweb platform:

  1. Sign in and open Website Performance for your site. For a site not previously connected, select Connect your website.
  2. Hover over the Info (i) icon and select Connect my analytics.
  3. Sign in to your Google account, choose the website to be measured and click Next.

From the Similarweb website, for the free public connection:

  1. On similarweb.com, search for your domain.
  2. Select Claim Your Website next to Traffic Overview, then sign in to your Google account.
  3. Choose the website to be measured and click Next. The documented flow ends with a confirmation message.

Review the data access requested on Google’s permission screen. The official guide does not list that screen’s buttons.

GA4 connected, but data is missing

Check these points in order:

  1. Confirm the domain, property and connection time. Similarweb says GA4 data can take up to 48 hours to sync.
  2. Check which source is displayed: GA4 data or a Similarweb estimate. Premium accounts can toggle between them; the public site may show estimates if Similarweb detects inconsistencies.
  3. Check where you are looking. The Similarweb browser extension displays estimates and does not show connected GA4 data.

These checks follow the GA4 connection FAQ.

For a source check, Google’s Traffic acquisition help documents the GA4 report and session-scoped dimensions. Save the metric and period you are checking.

What connection does and does not change

A connection lets you view your website’s GA4 figures alongside Similarweb estimates. Connecting GA4 does not change Similarweb’s own estimate for the website.

Keep the data source visible when comparing. The traffic comparison hub helps separate the reports, and the GA4 session definition provides a short reference for the unit.

If the issue is an unavailable estimate, read why Similarweb shows “Not enough data” before treating the connection as a way to change modelled coverage.
